Objectives
  • Simplify trip planning: Roam’s mission was to create a one-stop app where users could build itineraries, book essentials, and coordinate group plans without switching apps or losing track.

  • Enable shared experiences: Catering to groups meant empowering real-time collaboration, messaging, and shared responsibilities.

  • Design for inclusivity and personalization: The app needed to feel welcoming and efficient for different traveler profiles—from solo adventurers to families.

  • Contribute within a team: As the lead UX designer, I worked closely with fellow students on branding and interaction design, ensuring cohesive storytelling and user flow.

Challenges

Designing for varied travel styles without overwhelming interface complexity was critical.

  • Wide-ranging user needs: Balancing detailed features without clutter presented a challenge to the design approach.

  • System integration hurdles: Seamlessly integrating external booking platforms with in-app workflows while maintaining data privacy and security demanded careful technical collaboration.

  • User frustration with existing tools: Many users expressed irritation at juggling multiple apps with non-intuitive, multi-step flows lacking personalization—driving focus toward modular UX and comprehensive user testing.

Approach
  • Collaborative Research: Working with my project team, we conducted extensive interviews, surveys, and competitor audits to gather comprehensive insights. Insights revealed pain points such as fragmented tool usage, a lack of real-time collaboration, and overwhelming interfaces in existing apps.

  • User-Centered Design & Ideation: I took the lead in translating research into wireframes, emphasizing simple and clean navigation, enabling customization, and shared trip management. We sketched solutions that focused on flexibility and ease, prototyping key features such as co-planning and calendar sync.

  • Prototyping & Iteration: High-fidelity prototypes included interactive daily itineraries, in-app messaging, automated checklists, and profile-based recommendations. We conducted usability tests, iterating to refine flows, reduce friction, and clarify user tasks.

Outcome

Roam successfully unified vacation planning, enabling users plan solo or together with less stress. Features like real-time messaging and shared to-do lists improve group coordination. Personalized suggestions and synced calendars create a smooth, adaptable experience that lessens planning fatigue. The prototype reflected our goal of “Roam free, but with a plan.”

  • Unified Planning Solution: Roam offers a stress-reducing hub where solo and group travelers can plan collaboratively and stay organized.

  • Personalized Experience: Tailored user profiles and recommendations helped users feel that the app adapted to their unique needs.

  • Effective Collaboration Tools: Shared itineraries, messaging, and real-time sync increased coordination and user confidence in multi-person trip planning.

impact

This project showcased the power of integrated design and collaboration, where user insight met creative iteration to solve a complex problem. Roam stands as a testament to thoughtful, adaptive design that empowers adventure without chaos.

Roam laid a foundation for my approach to human-centered, flexible design and refined my ability to lead user research, align team vision, and prioritize clarity in the user experience.
